Ouagadougou: The Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) voted on Tuesday to dissolve the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), stating that it no longer aligns with the country's new socio-political context.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this decision is intended to create institutional harmony with the Transition Charter and to support the revolutionary aspirations of the Burkinabe people. Last July, the government proposed a bill targeting the dissolution of CENI, citing it as budget-consuming and inconsistent with the Transition Charter's provisions.
The executive branch now seeks to transfer the electoral responsibilities of the CENI to the ministry responsible for Territorial Administration, reverting to the system in place before the establishment of the now-defunct commission.
