Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe government has launched an appeal for funds to complete the Thomas Sankara Memorial, with the project estimated to cost over 177 billion FCFA. An evening of discussions was organized to mobilize resources for the Isidore No«l Thomas Sankara Memorial Infrastructure Construction Project (PCIM-INTS), inviting individual and collective contributions.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event aimed to present the project's vision to a diverse audience, including stakeholders, institutions, organizations, technical and financial partners, and citizens. This gathering also served as an opportunity to announce a forthcoming call for voluntary contributions to secure the financial resources necessary for the project's completion.
The Minister of Culture, Pingdwinde Gilbert Ou©draogo, emphasized that the Thomas Sankara Memorial is not merely an architectural endeavor but a symbol of the ideals championed by the father of the Burkinabe Revolution, such as integrity, patriotism, social justice, freedom, sovereignty, and Pan-Africanism. He stressed the importance of stakeholder commitment to achieving the project's ambitious goals.
PCIM-INTS coordinator ‚¬°tienne Lompo called on the people of Burkina Faso, friendly nations, and supporters of President Thomas Sankara worldwide to support the memorial's construction. Lompo highlighted that Thomas Sankara is a global figure, and contributions from all admirers would honor his legacy.
Architect Di©b©do Francis K©r© outlined the final phase of the project, which includes an architectural representation of President Sankara, a mausoleum, a conference room, and a park. He urged the population to support the memorial, emphasizing its role as a place of memory for Thomas Sankara.
Jean Hubert Bazi©, a former companion of President Sankara, remarked on the symbolic significance of the mausoleum, predicting it will become a major monument in Burkina Faso and the West African sub-region. He expressed gratitude to the country's authorities for their efforts in preserving the memory of Thomas Sankara and his 12 companions.
The evening also featured the decoration of notable personalities, including Jean Hubert Bazi©, pan-Africanist activist Nathalie Yamb, and Paul Sankara, the late president's younger brother.
