Koupéla—During the 4th stage of the Tour international du Faso, which ran a distance of 136.800 km between Ouagadougou and Koupéla, Burkinabè cyclist Paul Daumont reclaimed the highly coveted yellow jersey.

According to Burkina Informational Agency, the competition was fierce between Daumont and Belgian cyclist Wouters Rutger. Just the day before, Rutger had narrowly outpaced Daumont by 3 seconds, stripping him of the yellow jersey on Avenue Thomas Sankara. During this stage, Rutger attempted to tail Daumont closely to prevent him from gaining bonus seconds in the three intermediate sprints of the day.

However, Daumont displayed a superior pedal stroke and secured the first hot spot at kilometer 44 in Koulbila, earning himself 3 bonus seconds. Rutger managed to come in third behind Moroccan cyclist Sabbahi El Houcaine, gaining just one bonus second. At that point, Daumont was just 1 second away from regaining the yellow jersey.

During the following intermediate sprints at Mogtédo and Zorgho, Cameroonian cyclist Nounawé Rodrigue Kuéré, who led the day’s longest breakaway at nearly 70 km, seized the limelight, especially as Rutger suffered a puncture. Daumont nonetheless took 2nd place in the second intermediate sprint, gaining an additional 2 seconds and retaking the yellow jersey.

In the final sprint to the finish line in Koupéla, Moroccan cyclist Achraf Ed-Doghmy took the lead, completing the 136.800 km distance in 3 hours, 15 minutes, and 6 seconds, with an average speed of 42.070 km/h. Daumont managed to hold onto Ed-Doghmy’s wheel, finishing in 2nd place ahead of Rutger, who came in 3rd.

Paul Daumont has successfully regained his yellow jersey, albeit with a narrow 3-second lead. The next stage, Tenkodogo-Zorgho, will be crucial in determining whether he can maintain his position. The Tour du Faso is scheduled to run from October 26 to November 5.
