Ouagadougou: The Union of Flour Mills of Burkina Faso has pledged to purchase the entire national wheat production for the 2024-2025 season at a set price of 500 FCFA per kilogram. This commitment was formalized during a contract signing ceremony held in Ouagadougou, between the National Association of Wheat Producers of Burkina Faso (UNPBB) and the National Union of Flour Mills of Burkina Faso (UMBF). The meeting was presided over by Ludovic Yigo, Director General of the Promotion of the Rural Economy.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the president of the National Association of Wheat Producers of Burkina Faso (ANPBB), Honor© Tankoana, expressed great satisfaction with this agreement. He highlighted that the signing marked the successful culmination of cooperation facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture. Tankoana emphasized the importance of this agreement as a foundation for long-term collaboration and pledged to supply high-quality wheat to maintain the trust placed in the association by the Union.
UMBF President Rimon Hajjar described the contract as an initial step toward boosting wheat production. He voiced hopes for increased production in the future, reducing the need for wheat imports. Ludovic Yigo commended the parties involved for reaching this agreement and stressed the importance of adhering to the contract terms to advance the wheat sector in Burkina Faso. This agreement aligns with the government's agro-pastoral and fisheries initiative aimed at achieving food sovereignty.
Reviving wheat production is a key component of the 2023-2025 Agro-pastoral and Fisheries Offensive. The initiative seeks to address domestic consumption needs and decrease reliance on imported wheat. The collaboration between producers and processors is seen as critical for the sustainable development of wheat production in the country.
