Ouagadougou: The General Directorate of Communication and Media (DGCM) in Burkina Faso is now responsible for issuing press cards and passes, following the formal transfer of this duty from the Higher Council for Communication (CSC) to the Ministry of Communication. This change was finalized on Wednesday with the transfer of archives and signing of official documents, marking a new chapter in the management of media credentials in the country.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the decision to host the technical committee for issuing press cards within the ministry was mutually agreed upon by the ministry in charge of communication and the CSC. The representative of the committee’s president, Nadège Yé, stated that the committee had been operating under the CSC since its inception in 2009 due to an agreement involving professional media organizations. However, in 2021, the responsibility was reassigned to the ministry’s general media directorate.
Nadège Yé highlighted the committee’s critical role in
supporting journalists and expressed hope that the ministry would allocate adequate resources to ensure its effective operation. She pointed out that financial constraints have been a significant challenge for the committee over the past 15 years.
Fidèle Aymar Tamini, secretary general and representative of the ministry, emphasized that the transfer signifies a commitment to advancing press freedom while better protecting journalists’ rights. He commended the CSC for its exemplary work in issuing press documents, acknowledging that their expertise has been crucial during the transition.
Adding to the discourse, Fousséni Kindo, the CSC’s representative, mentioned that a crisis in 2016-2017 had weakened the committee. He recognized the importance of the transfer to the ministry and assured the CSC’s support for the new arrangement.
In the period from 2020 to 2024, the technical committee successfully issued 441 documents, including 429 press cards and 12 passes, underscoring its active role in supporting med
ia professionals.
