YAMBA — In a significant military operation on June 25 and 26, 2024, Burkina Faso's 20th Rapid Intervention Battalion, supported by aerial forces, successfully neutralized over 150 terrorists in the region of Yamba, seizing a substantial amount of equipment.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the operation was a response to an attempted blockade by hundreds of terrorists at Yamba (Gourma), aiming to halt the battalion's advance toward Gayéri. The ground forces, displaying significant resolve, managed to eliminate many attackers before aerial reinforcements were called in. Detailed sweeps of the area resulted in the discovery of 103 bodies on the battlefield, with approximately fifty more fatalities caused by drone strikes in surrounding areas.
The aerial assault included precise strikes on terrorists who had taken refuge under a tree, within huts of an abandoned hamlet, and in a concession, effectively dismantling their positions. Following the successful operation in Yamba, the aerial units proceeded to assist allied forces in the Center-North region of Noaka on June 27, 2024.
The military operation in Yamba not only dealt a substantial blow to terrorist activities in the region but also showcased the coordinated capability of Burkina Faso's ground and air forces. As the operation continues to unfold, further details are expected regarding the ongoing efforts on all fronts to secure the area.
