ABIDJAN – In the 34th edition of the African Football Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023, Burkina Faso’s national team, the Stallions, concluded their group matches with mixed results. Under the guidance of French coach Hubert Velud, the team achieved a victory, a draw, and a defeat in Group D, a performance sufficient to advance to the first round.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Stallions demonstrated a combination of tactical prowess and areas needing improvement. Their qualification for the round of 16 was secured, but captain Bertrand Traoré and his teammates recognize the need for adjustments to progress further. The team’s entry into the tournament was marked by a narrow victory against Mauritania’s Mourabitounes, a game where tactical changes played a crucial role.
Hubert Velud’s strategy, particularly in the use of lane players, was evident in the match against Mauritania. Tactical substitutions, including Fessal Tapsoba and an injury-returning Bertrand Traoré, boosted the team’s performance. Their forward play pressured Mauritania’s defense and showcased the Stallions’ solid defense, anchored by Edmond Tapsoba and Hervé Koffi.
The match against Algeria presented challenges for Burkina Faso. Despite leading twice, the team conceded goals on set pieces and in the match’s final moments. Coach Velud acknowledged the team’s vulnerability in these situations and promised adjustments. The 3-5-2 system employed by Velud received praise for its effectiveness.
However, the encounter with Angola’s Palancas Negras highlighted further areas for improvement. A free kick led to Burkina Faso conceding the first goal, with Velud admitting the team was tactically outclassed. The absence of key players due to injuries and suspensions, including Blati Touré and Mohamed Konaté, impacted the team’s performance.
The Stallions’ primary challenge in the first round was an uncreative midfield and the inability of players to deliver effective crosses. The anticipated return of key players like Dango Ouattara and Bertrand Traoré is expected to boost the team’s dynamism in offense.
Looking ahead to the round of 16, Burkina Faso is set to face the leader of Pool E, a formidable opponent in the competition. Coach Velud’s team must focus on improving concentration during set pieces to fulfill their high ambitions in the tournament.
