Ouagadougou – The Center for Training, Research, and Expertise in Drug Sciences (CEA-CFOREM) at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University is pioneering innovative approaches in pharmaceutical science to meet specific patient needs, from dosage reduction to shortened hospital stays.

According to the Burkina Information Agency, who spoke during a press event at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University on Monday, CEA-CFOREM is employing a variety of themes in their research, including the development of biomedicines, nanomedicines, and the synthesis of new drugs. The center is focused on adapting drug treatments to reduce the frequency of doses required and minimizing the duration of hospitalization, enhancing patient care efficiency.

Dr. Sombié explained that their research includes studying every component involved in medicine production to understand and improve the activity of each element. For instance, innovations in nanomedicine are being used to adjust medications so that a patient might only need a single dose for effects that would normally require multiple administrations throughout the day.

The center is also working on synthesizing new chemical products, optimizing them from natural sources to increase their effectiveness. Furthermore, CEA-CFOREM is involved in developing rapid diagnostic tests through biotechnology and enhancing cancer treatments with cell culture techniques.

Dr. Sombié highlighted the center’s broader goals, which include equipping Burkina Faso and the wider West African region with skilled professionals in pharmaceutical sciences. CEA-CFOREM aims to enhance local drug production and pharmaceutical practices through continuous education and innovative research, striving to improve the quality and effectiveness of medical treatments available in the region.
