YAOUNDÉ, CAMEROON — During the 50th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Burkina Faso strongly condemned Ukraine's reported support for terrorist activities in northern Mali and called for decisive action from the UN Security Council.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the head of Burkinabe diplomacy, Jean Marie Karamoko Traoré, highlighted Ukraine's alleged role as an accomplice in terrorism through various forms of support to militant groups in Mali. This issue was raised following an acknowledgment by a Ukrainian intelligence official about their involvement in the region, which has further complicated the security situation in northern Mali.
On August 21, foreign ministers from the Confederation of Sahel States had issued a joint letter urging the UN Security Council to address Ukraine's actions, which they described as a deliberate support for terrorism. The call for action was formalized in a communication to the president of the UN Security Council earlier this week.
The controversy stems from a video shared by Ukrainian Ambassador to Dakar, Yurii Pyvovarov, which purportedly shows a Ukrainian intelligence spokesman admitting to providing information to fighters of the CSP group before their engagements with the Malian Armed Forces. This revelation has prompted significant diplomatic backlash and raised serious concerns about the stability of the region.
