Burkina Faso to Revert to Historic Motto “Homeland or Death, We Will Conquer”

OUAGADOUGOU — Burkina Faso’s government has decided to reinstate the nation’s former motto, “Homeland or Death, We Will Conquer,” in place of the current “Unity, Progress, and Justice,” following a resolution passed during the Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the government plans to amend paragraph 4 of article 34 of the 1991 Constitution to formally re-establish “Homeland or Death, We Will Conquer” as the official motto of Burkina Faso. The government asserts that this change is intended to bolster patriotic sentiment and reignite the spirit of civic commitment that is seen as essential to guiding the people toward a future of collective prosperity.

The Burkina Faso Information Agency reports that the Council of Ministers has approved a preliminary draft constitutional law to revise the Constitution, thereby enshrining the reinstatement of the motto.
