Ouagadougou: Urban planning and housing stakeholders in Burkina Faso have commenced a 72-hour meeting to examine and validate a preliminary draft of the Urban Planning and Construction Code. The objective is to adapt the existing code, which has been in place for 18 years, to the current realities and developments in the field.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Mikaïlou Sidibé, Minister of Urban Planning and Housing, emphasized the need for updates to address inadequacies in the current document. Speaking at the opening of the national workshop in Ouagadougou, Sidibé highlighted the dynamic nature of legal texts, which must evolve and undergo modifications based on changing circumstances.

The proposed innovations in the preliminary draft include urban requalification, the Detailed Urban Planning Plan (PUD), regulation of urban roads, rainwater drainage, and energy efficiency in buildings. Additionally, a national real estate security commission is proposed to address demolition cases, along with the
establishment of a technical building center, in line with governmental recommendations.

Sidibé underlined that the review aims to correct imperfections in the existing code and make it relevant to the current context.
