Burkina Faso to Honor Fighters Lost in Terrorism Battle as National Heroes

OUAGADOUGOU — In a significant declaration from Ouagadougou, Minister of Justice Rodrigue Bayala stated that all individuals who sacrificed their lives in Burkina Faso’s struggle against terrorism, from anonymous volunteers to high-ranking officers, should be officially recognized as heroes or martyrs.

According to Burkina Information Agency, during Friday’s session of the orientation council for the national commission on heroes, martyrs, and invalids of the nation, it was affirmed that these fighters have played a crucial role in preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Burkina Faso. He emphasized that everyone from common volunteers for the defense of the homeland to notable figures like Ladji Yoro, who fell defending the nation, deserves this recognition.

The minister also highlighted that besides the combatants, several other Burkinabè figures who made significant sacrifices, including historical personalities and those from recent times, should also be honored. Figures such as Naaba Saaga II, Ouezin Coulibaly, and journalist Norbert Zongo are set to be recognized posthumously after thorough review by the commission.

Furthermore, Minister Bayala explained the process for conferring this status involves a meticulous examination of each individual’s contributions by a national commission, followed by approval from the strategic orientation council. He added that the council is tasked with overseeing actions that support and assist the nation’s heroes, martyrs, and disabled individuals.

For the upcoming year, the commission is expected to evaluate numerous candidates for these prestigious titles, aiming to enhance the support and recognition for those who have served the nation with ultimate sacrifice.
