OUAGADOUGOU – Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Venezuela’s Minister of Oil signed a memorandum of understanding on February 6, aimed at facilitating the export of Venezuelan petroleum products to Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the agreement was reached on the sidelines of the joint cooperation commission between Burkina Faso and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The memorandum is set to pave the way for the importation of petroleum products from Venezuela to Burkina Faso, establishing a direct partnership between the Burkinabè National Hydrocarbons Company (SONABHY) and Petroleos de Venezuela (PDV-SA).

Following the signing, technical teams from both nations are expected to convene to discuss the specific quantities and types of hydrocarbons Burkina Faso requires. The memorandum represents the culmination of negotiations that began last June in Caracas, led by Burkina Faso’s Minister in charge of trade, Karamoko Jean Marie TRAORE, and Venezuela’s Minister of Oil, Rafael Tellechia.

Additionally, significant attention was given to the recent Burkina-Venezuela cooperation agreement aimed at facilitating the importation of Venezuelan petroleum products.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the state daily, a memorandum of cooperation was signed on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, in Caracas, Venezuela, between Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, the Burkinabè Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation, and his Venezuelan counterpart, Rafael Tellechia. This agreement, aimed at easing the importation of Venezuelan petroleum products into Burkina Faso, is noted as a culmination of negotiations that began in June of the previous year. Sidwaya highlighted that this cooperation is an addition to the ongoing joint commission between Burkina Faso and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.



The private newspaper Le Pays shifted focus to the Chinese New Year 2024, celebrated under the sign of the dragon, noting the vibrant atmosphere leading up to the festival. However, it also delved into the CAN 2023 final, featuring commentary from Mahamadi Lamine Kouanda, the former president of Etoile filante d’Ouagadougou (EFO). Kouanda, also the honorary president of the National Union of Stallion Supporters (UNSE), remarked humorously on the final match between Ivory Coast and Nigeria, suggesting the outcome would depend on which team had the most potent fetishes.



LObservateur Paalga, another leading Burkinabè newspaper, described the upcoming match as a “Duel of giants between Pachyderms and Raptors,” highlighting the equally matched strengths of Nigeria and Ivory Coast. In contrast, Sidwaya revisited the semi-final clash where the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire secured their spot in the final by defeating the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo with a 1-0 victory at the Alassane-Ouattara stadium in Ebimpé, Abidjan. The win, which took place on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, was met with euphoria by fans in Ebimpé, as reported by Sidwaya.
