Burkina Faso Sets Conditions for Joining International Bodies

OUAGADOUGOU - Burkina Faso outlined a new framework, termed its "priority social contract," for ratifying international conventions and joining international organizations, during a presentation at the 112th International Labor Organization (ILO) conference in Geneva on Monday.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Minister of State and head of the Burkina Faso delegation, the country will base its decisions to join or ratify international agreements on this contract, which emphasizes national sovereignty and the will of its people.

The social contract, detailed in Burkina Faso's Action Plan for Stabilization and Development (PASD), prioritizes national security, an efficient response to humanitarian crises, the promotion of good governance, and anti-corruption efforts. It also includes political, administrative, and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening democratic culture, rule of law, national reconciliation, and social cohesion, along with organizing free, transparent, and inclusive elections. Bazié highlighted the consistency of Burkina Faso's approach with the ILO's vision for a new social contract, as outlined in the Director General's report.

Furthermore, Bazié criticized the underrepresentation of African nations in international bodies, calling it a breach of decency principles and cautioning that the ILO must address these disparities to maintain its relevance as a UN specialized agency. He also expressed solidarity with Mali and Niger, partners in the Alliance of Sahel States, which face ongoing terrorism challenges largely unsupported by the United Nations.
