Burkina Faso Sees Return of Over One Million Displaced Persons to Original Villages, Says Prime Minister

Burkina faso: More than one million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been resettled in their original villages, according to the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo. In his address on the state of the nation, the Prime Minister revealed that 1,160,935 people from 871 localities returned to their homes in 2025.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Prime Minister made these remarks on Friday before the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT). He emphasized the Burkinabe people's strong solidarity and capacity for resilience in supporting internally displaced persons. Despite the challenges, many citizens have aided their displaced compatriots in meeting their basic needs with dignity.

Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo highlighted that the government has supported these vulnerable populations by providing over 22,000 tons of food and more than 290 tons of medicine. Nearly 59,000 displaced households, including returnees, received essential household items. Additionally, more than 18,000 households benefited from emergency shelter, while thousands of displaced students were assisted with scholarships and other forms of aid to continue their education.

The Prime Minister assured that the government has strengthened its recovery and resettlement support actions throughout 2025. Efforts included the provision of over 16,300 breeding nuclei of small ruminants, around 6,400 tons of improved seeds, 900 tons of fertilizers, and various production materials and equipment for resettled communities.
