Ouagadougou: More than 3.3 million primary school children and 190,000 preschool children were enrolled in Burkina Faso during the 2024-2025 school year, the Director General of Sectoral Studies and Statistics at the Ministry of Basic Education, Beno®t Bonaventure Segda, announced on Monday at the opening of the National Education and Literacy Statistics Days (JSENA).
According to Burkina Information Agency, more than 3.3 million children were enrolled in primary school and more than 190,000 in preschool during the 2024-2025 school year. Speaking on Monday at the opening of the National Education and Literacy Statistics Days, Mr. Segda indicated that the preschool enrollment rate is 8.2%, while the gross primary school enrollment rate stands at 103.1%.
He stated that the sector has experienced a decline in enrollment indicators over the past five years due to the security crisis, before emphasizing that significant efforts have been made to keep many educational institutions open. According to him, these efforts have enabled a significant number of children to reintegrate into the education system since last year, which explains the 103.1% rate recorded at the primary level.
The 2025 edition of the National Education and Literacy Statistics Days is being celebrated under the theme "Evidence-Based Educational Governance: A Driver of Resilience, Inclusion, and Patriotism for a Prosperous Burkina Faso," aiming to promote the use of statistics in decision-making and the management of the education system.
Ibrahim Sanon, representing the Minister of Basic Education, stated that the statistics produced constitute essential references for the public administration, technical and financial partners, private sector stakeholders, national, sub-regional, and international organizations, as well as for the media, students, and researchers. At the close of the opening ceremony, he thanked all those involved in the education system who, despite the challenging security situation and limited resources, work with dedication and perseverance to produce reliable and high-quality statistical data.
