Burkina Faso Sees Improvement in Road Safety with Increased Helmet Awareness

Burkina faso: Road safety indicators have improved, with 214 fewer incidents recorded in one month, stated Divisional Police Commissioner W. Emmanuel Zongo, Chief of Staff to the Minister of Security, on Tuesday in Ouagadougou. He welcomed the growing awareness of the importance of wearing helmets.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the chief of staff, representing the Minister of Security, held a press conference dedicated to presenting the results of Operation "WIBGA". The actions carried out as part of this operation raised awareness among 6,337 people about the failure to wear helmets and other risky behaviors, and resulted in the rescue and evacuation of 2,189 victims to health centers. According to a document, these actions contributed to a reduction in the number of road traffic accident-related interventions, with 214 fewer interventions during the last two weeks of the operation.

He attributed these results to awareness campaigns combined with crackdowns carried out by the various defense and security forces, with the support of the media. However, the divisional police commissioner noted that uncivil behavior still persists on the roads.

He therefore invited "the public, especially users of two-wheeled vehicles, to truly consider wearing a helmet as an obligation and a necessity for survival." Because, he emphasized, "first and foremost, you have to be alive and healthy." He lamented the numerous cases of head trauma recorded in traffic accidents.

"Often, we only realize the importance of this action when we ourselves are injured or a loved one is affected, even though it is a simple gesture that saves lives," he added.

Operation "WIBGA" aimed to ensure the safety of people and their property during the holiday season. It took place from December 15, 2025, to January 15, 2026, throughout the entire country and mobilized all the Defense and Security Forces.
