Burkina Faso Reports 295 Traffic-Related Deaths in First Quarter of 2024

OUAGADOUGOU - Burkina Faso has recorded a troubling number of 295 deaths from traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2024, as reported by the National Road Safety Office (ONASER).

According to Burkina Information Agency, the chief of staff in charge of transport, during a press conference on July 2, 2024, there were 5,542 traffic accidents that resulted in over 3,700 injuries during this period. The data from ONASER shows a total of 3,799 individuals were injured. Sawadogo highlighted that the primary cause for these fatalities has been excessive speeding on national roads.

In response to the rising accident rates, Burkina Faso's transportation authorities conducted control operations to enforce speed limits and address other driving infractions from June 27 to June 29, 2024. These efforts were a collaboration between the General Directorate of Land and Maritime Transport, ONASER, and the Motor Vehicle Control Center (CCVA).
