Ouagadougou: The Secretary General of the Ministry of Basic Education, Literacy and the Promotion of National Languages (MEBAPLN), Ibrahima Sanon, announced that 1,910 educational establishments in recaptured areas will reopen in 2024, allowing more than 400,000 students to return to school.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Sanon stated that for the year 2024, these educational institutions have been reopened in recaptured areas, enabling over 400,400 students to resume their education. In addition, more than 49,000 centers and classes have been opened, facilitating education for more than 4,400,000 students.
Sanon addressed this during the launch of the third joint mission to monitor the implementation of the strategic plan for the development of basic and secondary education (PSDEBS) for 2024, held on Monday, May 5, 2025. He noted that the implementation of the PSDEBS has achieved a progress rate of 84.72%, yet acknowledged existing challenges, such as resuming classes in all recaptured areas, strengthening education in response areas, and mobilizing resources to support the education system.
The meeting, scheduled for May 5-9, 2025, aims to monitor the progress of the basic and secondary education sub-sector by reviewing the technical and financial activities carried out in 2024. This joint mission is conducted in collaboration with financial and technical partners.
Celeste Staley, head of technical and financial partners (TFP), expressed the partners’ commitment to supporting the government in promoting quality education for all children in Burkina Faso, despite the global challenges in resource mobilization. She emphasized that the meeting serves as an opportunity for TFPs to assess the progress of PSDEBS and the challenges ahead.
