Burkina Faso Real Estate Challenges: Citizens Face Obstacles in Building on Their Plots

Ouagadougou – Across several outskirts of Burkina Faso’s capital, citizens are struggling to construct buildings on their legally acquired plots, not due to financial constraints but because of opposition from fellow residents. This phenomenon, affecting areas recently earmarked for development, has sparked conflicts and stands as a testament to the city’s growing real estate woes.

According to Burkina Information Agency, in neighborhoods such as Zekounga in the district of Bassinko, residents have actively sought to halt new constructions, citing grievances over the allocation of plots and alleging malpractices in subdivision processes. The opposition has led to legal battles, with some plot owners resorting to the courts for resolution, while others have felt compelled to use threats to proceed with construction. The situation highlights a broader issue of land allocation and housing rights within the capital, reflecting the challenges faced by many in securing stable housing amidst bureaucratic and social hurdles.
