Ouagadougou: President Aboubacar Sangoul© Lamizana, who governed Upper Volta-now known as Burkina Faso-from 1966 to 1980, is remembered for his impactful leadership marked by rigorous management of public funds, military involvement in socio-economic development, and a commitment to dialogue and consensus.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Lamizana rose to power unexpectedly in the wake of a popular uprising on January 3, 1963. He emphasized his neutrality by declaring that he belonged to no specific region or ethnic group, aiming to unite all Voltaic citizens in assuming collective responsibility. Despite inheriting an acute economic crisis, Lamizana successfully convinced the populace to accept necessary austerity measures that had been previously resisted.

Lamizana’s leadership was characterized by his courteous approach, which some critics labeled as complacency. However, his supporters viewed him as a thoughtful leader who carefully deliberated on issues before taking action. He was known for his ability to navigate political tensions, often seeking compromise and avoiding unnecessary confrontations with his opponents.

During his administration, Lamizana encouraged political parties to reach an agreement on governance. When this proved unfeasible, he, along with the military, seized power on December 12, 1966, and suspended political activities for four years. Despite these measures, Lamizana later demonstrated a commitment to democracy by orchestrating a highly contested election in 1978, which he ultimately won in a runoff, earning recognition for its democratic nature.

Lamizana’s tenure is also noted for his stringent and transparent management of public funds, which stabilized public finances and facilitated development initiatives. He was acquitted of any financial mismanagement by the People’s Revolutionary Tribunals, underscoring his governance’s integrity.

In addition, Lamizana played a pivotal role in involving the military in national development projects, including infrastructure and agricultural production. His cultural contributions are significant, notably through the establishment of FESPACO and the nationalization of movie theaters to bolster Burkina Faso’s film industry.
