Burkina Faso Parliament Reduces Public Holidays from 15 to 11

Ouagadougou: The Transitional Legislative Assembly of Burkina Faso has enacted a new law, reducing the number of public holidays from 15 to 11, aiming to achieve annual savings of 16.88 billion CFA francs.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the restructured system sets the number of paid days off at 11. The retained holidays include January 1 (New Year's Day), March 8 (International Women's Day), May 1 (Labor Day), May 15 (Day of Customs and Traditions), August 15 (Assumption), December 11 (National Day), and December 25 (Christmas Day). Additionally, movable religious holidays such as Ascension Day, Mawlid, Ramadan, and Tabaski continue to be recognized as public holidays.

The law further categorizes commemorative days as non-public holidays. These dates include January 3 (Popular Uprising), August 4 (Advent of the Revolution), August 5 (Proclamation of Independence), October 15 (Thomas Sankara Day), October 31 (Martyrs' Day), and November 1 (Army Day and All Saints' Day). The government anticipates that this reform will result in savings amounting to approximately 16.88 billion CFA francs.
