Burkina Faso/Nuclear Power: ABEA Strengthens the Capacities of the National Program Implementation Committee

Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe Atomic Energy Agency (ABEA) initiated a capacity-building workshop for the Burkina Faso Nuclear Power Program Implementation Committee (CMPE-BF) members in Ouagadougou, aiming to equip them with the necessary tools for the effective execution of the nuclear power program.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Director General of ABEA, Harouna Sawadogo, emphasized the need for the committee members to be trained in conceptual, methodological, and operational tools to carry out their responsibilities in developing Burkina Faso's nuclear power infrastructure. The workshop, scheduled for April 20-24, 2026, is designed to prepare stakeholders for the various phases of the program. It is being conducted by three experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Sawadogo described the nuclear power program as a project requiring strict organization and effective coordination. He noted the strategic position of the CMPE-BF, which is tasked with coordinating technical, economic, and strategic studies, managing institutional interactions, and ensuring the coherence of actions.

Given the program's complexity and international standards, Sawadogo stressed the importance of continuously enhancing the skills of committee members. He also mentioned the significance of adopting the IAEA's step-by-step approach, which allows for the gradual development of a safe and secure nuclear program while considering national realities.

A significant aspect of the workshop will be the preparation of a self-assessment report, which will evaluate the country's readiness for nuclear energy, identify accomplishments, pinpoint gaps, and outline a roadmap for future actions. Sawadogo highlighted the critical role of human capital, urging committee members to demonstrate dedication and professionalism, learning from other nations' experiences with nuclear power programs.

The CMPE-BF comprises representatives from various ministries and institutions across Burkina Faso, who are expected to drive the success of the national nuclear power program through their expertise and commitment.
