Burkina Faso Ministry of Security Targets Reduction in Corruption by 2026

Ouagadougou: The Ministry of Security in Burkina Faso has announced an ambitious goal to combat corruption within its ranks, aiming to exit the top five most corrupt sectors by 2026. This declaration was made during the first session of the Consultation Framework of Control Bodies (CCOC), held in Ouagadougou. The session focused on the theme: 'Integrity, Honor, and Responsibility: Fundamental Values of the Security Service.'

According to Burkina Information Agency, Security Minister Mamadou Sana emphasized the importance of this goal, stating that it is not merely an option but an obligation for the ministry to improve governance and strengthen security mechanisms. Corruption, described by Sana as a "gangrene," has weakened national efforts to maintain security.

In his address, Minister Sana highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Burkina Faso in terms of security and development. Despite these challenges, the country remains committed to social transformation. However, corruption within security services continues to be a significant hurdle, as evidenced by frequent mentions in RENLAC reports, an organization that monitors corruption in Burkina Faso.

To address these issues, the ministry has adopted several measures. These include a significant reduction in roadside checkpoints, from about 400 to just 50, the use of technology for better control, and the limiting of harassment practices. Additionally, there will be unannounced checks and systematic summoning of agents suspected of misconduct, alongside investigations following any corruption allegations.

The establishment of the CCOC, as per the decree issued on October 6, 2025, is a crucial step in this effort. It serves as a platform for exchange, method harmonization, and synergy of action among different control bodies. Wendongoundi Hamadou Guigma, the Inspector General of Services at the Ministry, expressed optimism about the CCOC's potential. He believes it will help coordinate robust actions against corruption, acknowledging that deviant behaviors by some tarnish the efforts and sacrifices of the committed majority working towards national security.
