Burkina Faso Ministry of Health and LBCE Join Forces for Epilepsy Care Enhancement

Ouagadougou: The Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jo«l Arthur Kiendr©b©ogo, called for increased engagement from stakeholders to improve epilepsy management in Burkina Faso. This call was made during the inaugural days of the Burkinabe League against Epilepsy (LBCE).

According to Burkina Information Agency, Dr. Kiendr©b©ogo, representing the Minister of Health, highlighted the importance of the LBCE's initiative as a platform for scientific exchange, reflection, and advocacy on neurological diseases. He emphasized the need to enhance the capacities of healthcare professionals, improve access to specialist care, and raise public awareness about epilepsy. Furthermore, he reiterated the health authorities' commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at improving care for individuals with epilepsy.

Professor Anselme Dabilgou, president of the LBCE, described the event as a "historic moment" in the national efforts to support people with epilepsy. He noted that the collective desire to better understand, prevent, and manage this condition is still hindered by prejudices and socio-cultural constraints. He urged health sector actors, researchers, partners, and communities to collaborate in fighting the stigmatization associated with epilepsy.

Professor Dabilgou expressed concern over the ongoing challenges faced by people with epilepsy in accessing diagnosis, treatment, and specialized care, alongside social and professional exclusion. He stressed that despite these challenges, epilepsy can often be diagnosed, treated, and controlled. The events aim to foster experience sharing among specialists, promote scientific research, and encourage greater social inclusion for those living with epilepsy.

The discussions during these days will particularly address the challenges related to early diagnosis, treatment availability, and reducing stigma within communities.
