Burkina Faso Lawyer Detained on Suspicion of Conspiracy

OUAGADOUGOU — Prominent lawyer Guy Hervé Kam has been detained on charges of conspiracy against state security and criminal conspiracy, the military court in Burkina Faso reported. His detention since May 28, 2024, follows allegations of his involvement in a broader plot to destabilize the government in August 2023.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Kam, along with civilians Mathias Ouédraogo, Mahamadi Ouédraogo, and Amado Ouédraogo, allegedly collaborated with current and former military personnel to target key governmental figures. The conspiracy involved the geolocation and surveillance of the homes of several high-ranking officials, including the Head of State Captain Ibrahim Traoré and other ministers, with intentions of assassination to precipitate a government overthrow. The operatives implicated in this plan were arrested on September 5, 2023, with subsequent detentions of the civilian conspirators following revelations from the Directorate of State Security.
