Burkina Faso Launches RAMU Pilot Phase for Over 31,000 Public Employees

Ouagadougou: 31,441 public employees in Burkina Faso are set to benefit from the pilot phase of the Universal Health Insurance Scheme (RAMU) starting February 1, 2026. The initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of Public Service, Mathias Traor©, and Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou from the Ministry of Health, was formalized through agreements signed with public healthcare partners on January 13.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the RAMU registration operation, initiated in the last quarter of 2024, had registered 344,893 insured individuals from both public and private sectors by January 5, 2026. The pilot phase will initially cover 31,441 public sector employees and their dependents, providing them access to RAMU healthcare services.

Minister Traor© highlighted the government's commitment to social protection, aligning with the directives of the Popular Progressive Revolution (RPP) and the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traor©. He described the agreements as a significant advance in citizen social protection.

Ousmane N©r©, Director General of the Yalgado Ou©draogo University Hospital Center, confirmed the Ministry of Health's involvement throughout the process. He assured that healthcare facilities are compliant with the agreement and that stakeholders have been informed. N©r© also noted that awareness campaigns and training will continue to facilitate insured individuals' access to care and benefits.

Soumaila Gamsor©, Director General of the National Universal Health Insurance Fund (CNAMU), stated that the agreements with public healthcare providers result from a long process that began in 2006. These agreements will enable beneficiaries to receive medical consultations, surgical procedures, radiology, and medical imaging services.
