Burkina Faso Grants Wards of the Nation Status to Children of Fallen Soldiers

OUAGADOUGOU — In a recent move by the Burkinabè government, 63 children of soldiers who died defending their country have been granted the status of wards of the Nation. This designation is intended to recognize and honor the patriotic sacrifices made by their parents.

According to Burkina Information Agency, a consultant on issues of radicalization and violent extremism, this measure serves as a symbolic gesture of the nation's gratitude towards the families of those who have fallen in battle. Dr. Yago expressed his views in an interview with the Agence d'Information du Burkina (AIB) on Friday. He emphasized that the recognition of these children as wards of the Nation helps them understand the significant patriotic commitment their parents made in the liberation of the Burkinabè Nation.

Dr. Yago also suggested that this initiative could potentially boost morale among troops currently serving at the front, providing them with reassurance that their sacrifices are acknowledged and valued by their country. "The Nation will always remain grateful for their patriotic commitment," he stated, underscoring the importance of continuing support not only for the families of the deceased but also for soldiers who have been disabled due to acts of terrorism.

The recognition, formalized last Wednesday, comes as part of a broader effort by the government to provide ongoing support to the families affected by the conflict. The Minister in charge of Justice, Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, outlined that wards of the Nation will now benefit from various entitlements including free healthcare, schooling, and public transportation, along with moral, material, and financial support.

Dr. Yago further highlighted the need for clear and understandable criteria for the designation of wards of the Nation, ensuring that the process is transparent and inclusive.

This policy is introduced against the backdrop of nearly a decade of terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso, which have caused numerous casualties among civilians and members of the Defense and Security Forces alike.
