Burkina Faso Government Vows to Boost Women’s Role in Mining Sector

OUAGADOUGOU — The Burkinabe government has committed to enhancing support for women in the mining sector, aiming to bolster their contribution to national prosperity. This pledge was made during the International Mining Women’s Day celebrations, organized by the Association of Women in the Mining Sector of Burkina Faso (AFEMIB) on June 14 and 15, 2024.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Minister of Mines and Quarries, the government recognizes the significant role women play in the mining sector and is dedicated to advancing initiatives that support their involvement. “My department is aware of the contribution of women in the mining sector and is committed to strengthening initiatives to support them,” declared Minister Gouba during a ceremony held on Friday.

The minister outlined several key areas of focus for enhancing women’s participation in mining, including capacity building through training and mentoring, improving working conditions, and promoting policies that ensure equal opportunities and inclusion for all women in the sector.

Lucie Kabré, president of AFEMIB, highlighted that the celebration is not only a reflection on the successes of women in mining but also a crucial time to address challenges to ensure that “gold can shine for all women in Burkina.”
