Burkina Faso Government to Enhance Combat Forces’ Operational Capacities

Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe government adopted a draft law on Wednesday to enable the government to implement specific measures, through decrees, aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the National Armed Forces and the Internal Security Forces to combat terrorism.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Council of Ministers reviewed the draft law under the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs. This law authorizes the government to take necessary actions in response to constraints related to national defense needs.

The Council highlighted that the persistent terrorist threat necessitates a state of constant engagement for the National Armed Forces (FAN) and the Internal Security Forces (FSI), which calls for enhanced capabilities and a suitable legal adaptation mechanism.

Currently, the organization relies mainly on a traditional regime of normative production, which fails to provide for the quick deployment of measures tailored to operational demands.

The proposed bill seeks to establish an exceptional legal framework that allows the government, for a defined period, to take specific actions through ordinances. These measures aim to strengthen the operational capacity of the FAN and the FSI, alongside improving the strategic management of military and paramilitary human resources.

This legislative text will enable the government to act with the necessary flexibility to implement urgent and targeted measures directly tied to national security, the operational restructuring of forces, and strategic management of military and paramilitary personnel.

After discussions, the Council of Ministers approved forwarding the draft law to the Transitional Legislative Assembly for further consideration.
