OUAGADOUGOU — Friday’s editions of Burkinabe newspapers prominently featured the creation of the Burkina Faso Atomic Energy Agency (ABEA) and the celebration of the Assumption, following announcements in the Council of Ministers on August 14.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the government’s decision to establish the ABEA marks a significant step towards achieving energy independence and fostering a competitive, modern economy. The headline “Energy independence: From shadow to light” reflects the publication’s emphasis on the transformative potential of this initiative. Similarly, Observateur Paalga, a leading private daily, announced “the Burkinabè atomic energy agency is born,” highlighting the agency’s role in coordinating nuclear industry activities within the country.
Le Pays, another private daily, focused on the remarks of government spokesperson Emmanuel Ouedraogo, who relayed President Ibrahim Traoré’s vision that the ABEA would ensure Burkina Faso’s energy independence, facilitate national industrialization, and expand access to electricity across the country.
In addition to the atomic energy news, the newspapers also covered the Assumption celebrations, particularly the pilgrimage to Yagma, themed “Mary, queen of peace.” Cardinal Philipe Ouédraogo was reported by the Paalga Observer to have emphasized the importance of prayer and individual action in achieving peace. Sidwaya detailed how pilgrims at the martial sanctuary of Yagma in Ouagadougou prayed for the restoration of peace across Burkina Faso. Le Pays highlighted the central theme of the Assumption 2024 celebrations in Yagma, noting that the Catholic faithful prayed fervently for the cessation of terrorism and the establishment of lasting peace in the country.
