Burkina Faso Establishes National Commission to Coordinate Sahel Alliance Activities

OUAGADOUGOU — The Burkina Faso government has officially established the National Commission of the Confederation 'Alliance of Sahel States' (CN-AES), a central body tasked with coordinating the activities of the AES and directly reporting to Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Head of State.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the CN-AES will serve as the technical structure aiding the President in managing the operations and structure of the AES Confederation. The commission is charged with overseeing the implementation of decisions made by the College of Heads of State and the confederal sessions of the Councils of Ministers. Additionally, it will prepare meetings for these bodies and engage in strategic planning for the future of the AES Confederation. Among its other duties, the CN-AES will work on public outreach to promote understanding and support for the objectives of the AES Confederation.

The creation of the CN-AES follows the signing of the AES treaty on July 6, 2024, by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, which marked a significant commitment by these nations to unify their defense and diplomatic efforts in the Sahel region under a shared vision of cooperation and friendship.
