OUAGADOUGOU – A major operation conducted by Burkina Faso’s General Directorate of Veterinary Services has resulted in the seizure of five tonnes of illegal veterinary medicines across the country, as reported by the state newspaper Sidwaya. This extensive crackdown spanned twelve out of thirteen regions from August 2023 to March 2024, highlighting a widespread issue within the veterinary sector.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the confiscated items primarily consisted of antibiotics, antiparasitics, and vitamins available in various forms, such as tablets, injectable vials, and powders. The General Director of Veterinary Services, Rassablaga Dominique Sawadogo, emphasized the significance of removing these unauthorized products from circulation, noting their potential to compromise animal health and, by extension, human well-being. He explained that improper use of these substances could lead to drug residues in meat, posing risks to consumers and undermining the efforts of legitimate veterinary professionals.
Sawadogo also highlighted the broader implications of this operation, stressing the importance of curbing misuse and ensuring fair competition within the veterinary pharmaceutical sector. The Eastern region was identified as the most affected area in this sweeping campaign to uphold standards in veterinary care and product distribution.
