Burkina Faso Association Supports Children of Fallen Soldiers with Cultural Activities

OUAGADOUGOU — The Association of Women of Heroes of the Nation (AFEMH-N) hosted a day of cultural and recreational activities for the children of fallen Defense and Security Forces (FDS) members on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at the Palais de la Jeunesse et de la Culture Jean-Pierre Guingané in Ouagadougou. This initiative was aimed at fostering the personal development and social integration of these children, who have lost their parents in battle.

According to Burkina Information Agency, president of AFEMH-N, the event included a variety of activities such as a fashion show, artistic performances, poetry recitals, playbacks, and a film screening. These activities were specifically chosen to cater to the emotional and social needs of the children, offering them a chance to engage in joyous and creative expressions during their holiday break. Ms. Sigué emphasized that the event was not only a day for fun but also an opportunity for the children to momentarily set aside their grief and enjoy being kids.

Ms. Sigué also highlighted the resilience of these children, noting their strong academic performance despite the tragic loss of their parents. She expressed that the event was part of the association's broader effort to provide ongoing support and encouragement to the children as they prepare for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.

The event also served as a platform for Ms. Sigué to call on the community and potential donors to continue supporting the development of orphaned children in Burkina Faso. She advocated for more initiatives such as outings and summer camps to provide further emotional support to the children.

Wendlasida Juba Slacy Louré, a 9-year-old student and spokesperson for the children of fallen FDS members, expressed gratitude for the association’s efforts. The day was sponsored by Cheikh Omar Zongo, who works in the informal sector in Burkina Faso, further underscoring community support for the initiative.

AFEMH-N was founded to create a network of support among widows of deceased FDS members, and aims to extend comfort to their children through various activities. The association comprises 200 women who are dedicated to sustaining solidarity and aid for the families of Burkina Faso's fallen heroes.
