Ouagadougou: Burkina Faso and the Russian Federation have taken a significant step towards enhancing their collaboration in higher education and science by signing a memorandum of understanding. The agreement, formalized on Monday, January 12, 2026, aims to extend and deepen cooperation in these vital fields. The signing ceremony took place in Ouagadougou, with Professor Adjima Thiombiano, the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of Burkina Faso, and Ms. Nataliia Krasovskaia, Executive Director of the Center for Public Diplomacy of the Russian Federation, representing their respective countries.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the five-year agreement commits both nations to bolster their cooperation through the exchange of information and experience and by organizing joint activities. The focus will be on designing and implementing academic mobility programs for students, researchers, and faculty. These initiatives include academic exchanges, internships, participation in summer schools, and other mutually agreed-upon training programs.
Professor Thiombiano expressed optimism about the agreement's potential benefits for both nations, stating, "This desire is to make higher education and scientific research a vehicle for emancipation, cooperation, and sovereignty." The agreement builds upon previous collaborations, following the signing of six agreements between the universities of the two countries in February 2025.
Furthermore, the agreement will facilitate the organization and hosting of scientific events such as conferences, seminars, forums, and scientific roundtables, focusing on topics of common interest in the higher education and scientific research sector. Professor Thiombiano emphasized the importance of these initiatives in strengthening bilateral ties.
Nataliia Krasovskaia conveyed her satisfaction with the agreement, which coincides with the second anniversary of the Russian House in Ouagadougou. She highlighted that the agreement, founded on principles of responsibility, equality, and mutual respect, would reinforce the existing cooperation between the two nations. Krasovskaia stated, "Specifically, this agreement will allow us to build a solid bridge in the field of higher education and science."
