OUAGADOUGOU: Brigadier General C©lestin Simpor©, Burkina Faso’s Defense Minister, issued a call to action for his country’s military forces on Tuesday, urging them to decisively end the terrorist threat by 2025. He described the adversaries as weakened and stressed the importance of delivering a conclusive blow to eradicate the terrorist presence in the nation.

According to Burkina Information Agency, General Simpor© addressed the 61st Commando Infantry Regiment in Tenkodogo on December 31, 2024, emphasizing that the terrorist groups, now in a state of decline, are only capable of harassment operations. He urged the military to capitalize on this vulnerability to eliminate the threat, aiming for a future where the nation contends merely with minor criminal activities rather than well-armed militant groups.

The Defense Minister condemned the insurgents and their sponsors, accusing them of trying to destabilize Burkina Faso to prevent the country from harnessing its natural resources for the benefit of its people. He asserted that these external forces seek to keep the nation impoverished and undermine its sovereignty.

In a resolute statement, Simpor© offered an olive branch to the terrorists, suggesting dialogue if they disarm, but warned of relentless combat if they persist, even at the cost of long-term national debt.

Simpor© also spoke to the broader aspirations of the nation, emphasizing the need for true independence and sovereignty. He highlighted the importance of Burkina Faso’s ability to make its own decisions regarding international cooperation and resource management, warning against the perils of remaining under foreign influence.

He addressed the controversial withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), noting resistance from international actors who prefer Burkina Faso to remain within the grouping. Simpor© likened the situation to a tenant being forced to stay in a house against their will, pointing out inconsistencies in the process.

In a message of unity and vigilance, General Simpor© cautioned his forces against succumbing to manipulative promises aimed at destabilizing the country. He encouraged them to consider the future of their children and the nation’s development.

Regarding military readiness, he acknowledged existing equipment shortages but assured his troops of ongoing efforts to enhance the army’s capabilities, aspiring to make it the best-equipped force in the region.
