Burkina: African Initiative Celebrates 80th Anniversary of USSR’s Victory Over Nazis

Ouagadougou: The Russian-Burkinabe association African Initiative commemorated, Friday in Ouagadougou, the 80th anniversary of the USSR's victory over the Nazis with a caravan in the city of Ouagadougou.

According to Burkina Information Agency, a caravan took place this Friday, May 9, 2025, in the arteries of the city of Ouagadougou, organized by the African Initiative association as part of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the USSR over Nazism. Starting from Muammar Gaddafi Boulevard, passing through Thomas Sankara Boulevard with a stop at the Thomas Sankara Memorial, the caravaners reached the Russian House in Burkina Faso, located in Koulouba, where they were received by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation, Igor Martynov Alexandrovitch.

For the president of the African Initiative association, Soumala Azenwo, this caravan is a way of paying a vibrant tribute to heroes and "immortals." "They lost nearly 30 million souls in that war, and now 80 years later they are commemorating this day, 'VE Day,'" he said. "The idea behind this caravan is also to thank the Russian authorities for the welcome and special guest status granted to our comrade President, Ibrahim Traor©, at this commemoration," he added.

Mr. Azenwo took the opportunity to call on the people of Burkina Faso to remain united behind their leaders and the FDS, and not to pay attention to stateless people. For the president of the Burkina-Russia coalition, Moussa Sanfo, also a member of the National Coordination of Citizen Monitoring Associations, there is a partnership with sister associations in addition to the African Initiative.

The laying of wreaths was followed by a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the war. For the Russian ambassador to Burkina Faso, Igor Martynov, this day is not only a painful memory, but also a celebration of brotherhood between peoples.
