BUNASOLS Conference Highlights Urgent Need for Soil Acidity Management in Guiriko

Guiriko: The National Soil Bureau (BUNASOLS) organized a public conference in Bobo-Dioulasso from November 28 to 29, 2025, focusing on sustainable soil management. Under the patronage of Minister of State, Minister of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Commander Isma«l Sombi, the event gathered producers from the Guiriko region to discuss "Soil acidity: impact on crop productivity and producers' income".

According to Burkina Information Agency, Dr. Amadou Dicko, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Agriculture, emphasized the critical need to address soil acidification, which threatens agricultural productivity. "Agriculture is the pillar of our economy and the guarantee of our food sovereignty. However, this pillar is weakened, even though a lot of effort is being made on the ground. Recent studies by BUNASOLS sound the alarm: thousands of hectares of our land are affected by acidity," he stated.

Dr. Dicko highlighted the importance of these public conferences as platforms for direct dialogue between experts and producers. He noted that the objectives are to explain the causes of acidity, present practical methods, and promote good agricultural practices. He reiterated the government's commitment to agricultural resilience by prioritizing sustainable soil management and urged producers to apply the solutions discussed.

Dr. Poulouma Louis Yamogo, Director General of BUNASOLS, asserted that the meeting aligns with national goals to preserve land fertility. He cited studies in the Kou and Lower Mouhoun sub-basins that identify soil acidity as a significant barrier to crop productivity. Dr. Yamogo expressed optimism that the techniques shared at the conference would reverse recent yield stagnation trends and called for industry-wide cooperation to address food security challenges.

Producer Ibrahima Ouattara, who attended the meeting, praised the initiative. He believes that the conference will provide access to scientific solutions that help manage soil acidity and enhance productivity.

Following the Bobo-Dioulasso conference, BUNASOLS plans to hold a second event on the same theme from December 1 to 2, 2025, in Ddougou.
