Bumala Modern Market Nears Completion with 84% Progress

Bumala: The 400-trader capacity Bumala modern market is 84 percent complete, as confirmed by Joshua Sang, the Director of Communication at the office of the Government Spokesperson. Addressing the press during an inspection tour, Sang highlighted the market's potential to alleviate challenges faced by traders, especially during adverse weather conditions, by providing essential facilities like breastfeeding areas for lactating mothers.

According to Kenya News Agency, Sang expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting that the contractor is ahead of the expected timeline. The market, once completed, will prioritize traders who were relocated from the construction site during its development. Jack Olweny, the clerk of works, stated that the project, handed over to the contractor in December 2024, is slated for completion in June 2026. However, there is optimism that the remaining work will be finalized by December this year.

Busia County Director of Housing, Jason Abuga, noted that the site is well-lit to allow trading until 11:00 p.m., and on a typical market day, it is expected to attract 1,000 additional traders. The market will feature 20 shops, an ICT hub for online trade, and a hall for women to conduct table banking. Abuga emphasized the infrastructure's inclusivity, with ablution blocks for persons with disabilities, and mentioned the employment opportunities created for local youths, including welders, masons, and plumbers.

The project has positively impacted youth employment, as expressed by Brian Ajila, who shared that the initiative has not only reduced crime rates but also enabled him to open a fish stall. The market is a product of a partnership between the national government, which provided funding, and the County government of Busia, which provided the land.
