Chuncheon: RM and V, members of the globally renowned K-pop group BTS, were officially discharged from South Korea’s mandatory military service on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment as the third and fourth members of the septet to fulfill this obligation.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the two artists addressed fans and journalists at a ceremonious event held at a football field near V’s military unit in Chuncheon, approximately 75 kilometers northeast of Seoul. The event saw hundreds of fans gathering early in the morning, armed with signs and cheering wands, to show their support for the beloved stars.
The crowd erupted in cheers as RM and V emerged from separate vehicles, sharing a light hug. RM, donning sunglasses, celebrated the occasion with a saxophone performance of a soundtrack from a Japanese animated film. V stood beside him, presenting a bright smile and holding two flower bouquets. In compliance with guidance from their agency, BigHit Music, none of the other BTS band members were present, as fans were advised against attending to prevent safety hazards and overcrowding.
During his speech, RM expressed gratitude for the military experience, acknowledging the protection provided by those serving the country. He conveyed eagerness to return to the stage and perform soon. V also reflected on his military service, describing it as a time for self-reflection and preparation.
Following their remarks, RM and V left the scene separately in black minivans after a final salute. Both had enlisted in December 2023, with RM serving in the Army’s military band and V in a special mission unit under the military police. Their completion of service follows that of fellow members Jin and J-Hope, who were discharged in June and October of the previous year.
The forthcoming discharges of Jimin and Jungkook on Wednesday, along with Suga’s expected completion of service on June 21 as a social service agent, will mark the full return of the group to the music scene. In South Korea, military service is mandatory for all able-bodied men, lasting between 18 and 21 months.
To commemorate the occasion, Hybe, the parent company of BigHit Music, has adorned its Seoul headquarters with BTS and ARMY logos and the phrase “We Are Back.” This celebratory display will remain in place until June 29, coinciding with the group’s debut anniversary on June 13. Hybe expressed excitement for the group’s future projects, noting the solo activities of Jin and J-Hope and the growing anticipation for BTS’ collective endeavors.
