BRICS Nations Prioritize Collective Climate Change Strategies

Moscow – The BRICS nations are emphasizing the development of collective strategies to combat climate change, according to Makarov Igor, Head of the School of World Economy at HSE University, Russia. This collaborative focus reflects a shared recognition among the member countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—of the need for urgent action and sustainable development pathways to address the global challenge.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, who spoke in an exclusive interview with ENA, the BRICS countries have significantly enhanced their cooperative efforts on climate-related initiatives over recent years. These efforts include renewable energy development, carbon emissions reduction, and the implementation of adaptation strategies. With these nations counted among the world’s largest economies and major greenhouse gas emitters, their unified approach is crucial for global climate change mitigation efforts.

Igor highlighted that each BRICS country brings unique challenges and resources to the table, necessitating tailored strategies that respect their individual contexts while promoting shared objectives. He noted the significant responsibility that these nations bear, contributing to about half of global emissions. In response, Russia has proposed forming a compact group within BRICS, comprising ministers and responsible agencies, to forge a common framework for both mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Further, Igor added that BRICS should develop distinct climate change strategies that differ from those of developed nations, taking into account their diverse national circumstances and objectives. These strategies are also linked to broader sustainable development goals, including the transformation of energy systems which vary significantly across the bloc.
