The Brazilian Navy ship, OPV Amazonas, will be moored at the Port of Walvis Bay from 27 September to 01 October to participate in the Grand African Nemo 2023.
In a statement released by the Brazilian Embassy on Tuesday, the embassy said the primary objective of this year’s Grand African Nemo is to empower participating nations to bolster maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. This will be achieved through coordinated exercises addressing issues such as illegal fishing, sea pollution, piracy, maritime terrorism, and providing aid to distressed ships.
According to the statement, the ship embarked on its journey on 13 September from Rio de Janeiro’s Naval Base and is scheduled to return on 10 November. Throughout the operation, the ports of Walvis Bay, Luanda in Angola, Lome in Togo, Abidjan in Ivory Coast, and Maceio in Brazil will be visited.
OPV Amazonas is part of the first series of three vessels from the Amazonas class. It was commissioned by the Brazilian Navy on 29 June 2012 at Portsmouth’s Naval Base in the United Kingdom.
