Bougouriba: His Majesty Si© F©lix Ouattara, the chief of the land and customary and traditional leader of Di©bougou, welcomed the adoption by the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) of the law on the status of customary and traditional chieftaincy. He considers this development as enshrining the recognition of the identity and fundamental values of Burkina Faso.
According to Burkina Information Agency, His Majesty F©lix Ouattara expressed his gratitude to the ALT, the Burkinab¨ state, and the government, describing the initiative as "historic." He believes this law marks a decisive step in state-building by officially recognizing the place and role of customary and traditional chieftaincy in society.
The chief emphasized that marginalizing the traditional chieftaincy, which is seen as the founder of villages and a guarantor of social values, would be contradictory. He noted that issues such as amicable settlements, land disputes, and social cohesion often find solutions through traditional authorities.
His Majesty further highlighted that peace and stability, crucial for the country's development, are rooted in traditions and customs. He pointed out that valuing cultural heritage benefits Burkina Faso, similar to countries like Senegal, Benin, and some Asian nations.
The traditional chief also spoke on the duties of the chieftaincy, emphasizing the preservation of peace and the rejection of hatred, violence, and injustice within communities. He believes that the new law will help regulate practices and prevent deviant behavior by some chiefs.
He concluded by expressing hope that the law would quickly come into effect, stating that it will clarify roles within the society. On behalf of traditional authorities, he thanked Burkinab¨ authorities, expressing confidence that this reform will contribute to a return to a Burkina Faso founded on peace, security, and respect for traditional values.
