Boromo Boxing Gala Showcases Local Talent

BOROMO: The Boromo Boxing Club hosted a boxing gala on May 18, 2024, featuring participants from six clubs and fourteen boxers. The event, held at the Reading and Cultural Animation Center (CELPAC), included seven bouts across various weight categories and levels.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the participating clubs were from Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso, Périgouan, and Ouri in Balé province. The gala allowed young boxers, some of whom were entering the ring for the first time, to compete in three-round matches. The audience witnessed a range of results, including one knockout, two sponge throws, and four victories on points, with each boxer receiving a medal and an envelope.

The highlight of the event was a super lightweight bout between Séré Moussa from Bobo-Dioulasso and Aka Maurice from Ouri, the vice-champion of the last national championship. Aka Maurice won the match with two successive right hooks in the second round. Referee Batié Bazié noted that the level of competition was acceptable and highlighted the bright future of boxing in the province.

Adama Konaté, president of the Boromo Boxing Club, stated that the gala aimed to promote boxing in Boromo and Ouri and prepare boxers for the national championship. Despite financial challenges, the event succeeded with support from local sponsors Narcisse Tuina and Zakaria Guira. Germain Gnoumou, president of the Balé boxing district, called for further support to equip the district with professional boxing gear and make Boromo a hub for the sport.

The Boromo Boxing Club and the Ouri Athletic Club, established in 2021 and 2017 respectively, have shown promising results in national championships, with champions in the flyweight and light heavyweight categories.
