Borehole Inaugurated at Akazulu to Tackle Water Crisis

Akazulu: A new borehole was officially inaugurated at Akazulu village in the Eengodi Constituency of the Oshikoto Region on Monday. A total of four boreholes have been made accessible to the community, with the other three located at Onelao village, Oshikondeilwa village, and Otatashe village, all of which were constructed at a cost of over N.dollars 24 million.

According to Namibia Press Agency, speaking at the inauguration of the Akazulu borehole, Oshikoto Governor Sacky Kathindi said the new borehole is a concrete step towards restoring dignity, improving livelihoods, and securing a brighter future for the communities. He emphasized the commitment to ensuring that no community in Oshikoto is left behind in the provision of essential services.

Kathindi highlighted that in a region like Oshikoto, where drought and climate variability continue to threaten wellbeing and progress, access to clean and reliable water is considered a lifeline. He further noted the severe water crisis in Oshikoto, with many villages, farms, and institutions remaining without reliable access to water. Kathindi called for swift, coordinated, and strategic action to address the situation.

The governor stated that the commissioning of the borehole is part of a broader, sustained effort to secure water security for every household in the region. He mentioned the commitment to mobilizing resources, strengthening partnerships, and championing development interventions that uplift the people. Kathindi urged community members to safeguard the boreholes and use them responsibly.

Teofilus Nghitila, Executive Director responsible for Water and Marine Resources within the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, explained that the borehole has been fitted with mini desalination plants to filter the water and make it safer for human and animal consumption. The tanks will store the clean water and distribute it to the community through their taps.

Nghitila reported that the ministry will continue to provide technical support and assist the community as they receive training on how to use the system and manage the desalination facility.
