Boosting Local Fish Industry: Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust Hosts Market Day in Mariental

MARIENTAL — The Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) held its national fish consumption market day in Mariental on Saturday, aiming to support the local fish industry, promote fish consumption, and encourage small to medium enterprises within the sector.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Suzan Ndjaleka, the chairperson of the NFCPT board of trustees, emphasized the trust's significant role in fostering small, medium, and micro enterprises, aligning with national development goals and boosting employment. At the event, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the fisheries sector, including job creation, entrepreneurial opportunities, and contributions to government revenue supporting essential services like healthcare and education. Klazen also pointed out the importance of celebrating the nutritional benefits of fish and the overall contribution of fisheries to Namibia’s socio-economic development.

Mariental Mayor Cherien Kock noted that the market day serves as a platform to promote fish consumption and support local vendors, further enhancing community engagement and economic growth. The event featured a variety of activities, including a cook-off competition where local enthusiast Elize Kooper participated to explore her culinary skills and engage with potential business opportunities in fish sales.
