Busia: Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia has called on boda boda operators to work closely with security agencies to enhance security measures. Speaking at a boda boda sensitisation forum in Busia, Macharia acknowledged the operators’ unique position, as they start their day early and finish late, reaching areas inaccessible to security officers.

According to Kenya News Agency, Macharia emphasized the importance of confidentiality in information shared by boda boda operators with security officers to ensure their safety. He also advised the riders to adhere to traffic rules, highlighting the necessity of helmets, insurance, a riding license, and carrying only one passenger at a time. Furthermore, the government plans to implement digital registration for boda boda riders to streamline identification processes.

Macharia expressed gratitude towards the Ugandan leadership for their cooperation with Busia County’s security team in curbing motorcycle theft. He also encouraged riders to register with
the Social Health Authority for health services access and urged parents to monitor their children during holidays to avoid detrimental activities.

Bodaboda Safety Association of Kenya National Chairman Kevin Mubadi assured that the sector is committed to collaborating with the government to tackle insecurity issues. He also requested the Regional Commissioner to guide County Security teams to maintain a close working relationship with boda boda leaders. Mubadi reiterated the importance of registering with SHA for health benefits.

The forum saw participation from the Western Regional Security Team and boda boda leadership across the Western Region.
