NAROK: Boda boda operators in Narok County have rejected allegations circulating on social media that associate them with criminal activities contributing to insecurity in the region. The sector’s leadership asserts that thorough investigations have not linked their members to any crimes.
According to Kenya News Agency, Gideon Punyua, the chairman of the boda boda sector in Narok, stated that both police investigations and CCTV footage have failed to implicate any operators in criminal activities. He expressed confusion over why some individuals are attempting to associate the sector with crime. Punyua emphasized that the sector, comprising over 1,000 members, regularly convenes to address issues impacting their community, with a primary focus on enhancing security in the county.
Punyua encouraged the public to report any operators with credible evidence of criminal involvement, assuring that the sector’s officials would take appropriate action. He highlighted the sector’s commitment to collaborating with l
aw enforcement to improve safety in the town. He noted that a peaceful environment benefits their business, allowing them to operate continuously, unlike during periods of unrest when they must close early.
Stephen Ole Nakola, who oversees safety within the sector, reinforced the unity and peaceful nature of its members. He acknowledged the diverse backgrounds of operators, some of whom are less educated or come from impoverished circumstances, but emphasized their shared goal of improving their livelihoods. Nakola also mentioned that the Narok County Government has sponsored around 500 operators for driving courses to help reduce accidents.
The comments from Punyua and Nakola were made during a press briefing in Narok Town.
