BOBO-DIOULASSO—The Association for the Development of the Commune of Bobo-Dioulasso (AECB) is holding the 19th edition of the Chitumu, or Shea Caterpillar Festival, from July 29 to August 4, 2024. The event, which has been celebrated annually for 20 years (except in 2022), takes place on the grounds of the National Culture Week (SNC) headquarters.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this year’s festival, themed “Security Challenges and Resilience of Rural Women: What Perspectives?”, aims to promote the cultural and gastronomic significance of chitumu. The festival also provides an opportunity for women to market chitumu, contributing to their economic empowerment.
Lassina Sanon, president of the AECB and the organizing committee, emphasized that the festival showcases the richness and diversity of shea caterpillars in both raw and prepared forms. The event serves not only as a cultural celebration but also as a market platform for women to sell chitumu.
Siaka Sanou, representing the Minister of Culture, lauded the festival as an example of resilience and state support for cultural promotion. He noted that this year’s theme aligns with the ministry’s objectives and that the festival has become a model of rigor, excellence, and perseverance over its 20-year history.
Mamadou Lamine Sanogo, the sponsor of this edition, commended the festival for its originality and its promising outlook for the preservation of chitumu as part of Burkina Faso’s cultural heritage.
