Bobo-dioulasso: Seven streets and avenues in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso were renamed on Tuesday to pay tribute to servants of Burkina Faso and Africa with the aim of removing from urban roads the vestiges of colonialism, a long-standing imprint of the subjugation of ancestors, according to President of the special delegation (PDS) of the municipality, Laurent Kontogom.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the renaming initiative is part of the municipality's broader efforts to honor national and continental figures who have played significant roles in the history and development of Burkina Faso and Africa. By redesignating these streets, the city aims to foster a sense of pride and recognition for the contributions of African leaders and cultural icons.
The decision to rename these streets and avenues follows a series of consultations and discussions with local communities and historians to ensure that the new names reflect the values and heritage of the region. This initiative is seen as a step towards reclaiming local identity and acknowledging the efforts of African personalities who have made impactful contributions to society.
The renaming process was carried out with the involvement of various stakeholders, including community leaders and local government officials, ensuring that the changes resonate with the city's residents. The new street names are expected to serve as a daily reminder of the legacy and achievements of those who have shaped the nation and continent.
